Scent Detection with Hans Ebbers

Whether you’re a dog training enthusiast, a professional trainer, or somewhere in-between, you more than likely have scent work on your ‘Must Know More’ list.

Scent work (in its many varied forms) is having something of a ‘golden moment’ in the dog world.

Like all things dog training though, there are levels to this sh1t.

If you learn the foundations of this work the right way, the first time, you can skip a whole lot of heartbreak, lost time, and wasted effort…and you can actually swerve a ton of problems that are even harder to ‘fix’ than they are to avoid.

For those looking to address current deficits in their dogs detection work, it can become very hard to find somebody to identify and problem solve those issues. Perhaps you’ve even hit the point where you’re left constantly frustrated by more of the same advice, wherever you go.

As you keep moving up the food chain to find a professional that can actually help you get to where you want to go, you’ll eventually find somebody that not only know exactly who Hans Ebbers is…you’ll soon find out that person aspires to think, train and teach like him.

From recreational nose work to mine detection, from cadaver dogs to tracking, man trailing to precision sport type tracking…Hans’ scent training methodology has proven to reliably produce stellar results.

The Detection Dog Training System (DDTS)

What is this seminar all about?

Hans will be teaching his very simple, flexible and completely comprehensive step-by-step approach to detection work.

It is designed to avoid the problems that so often creep into detection type work from the very earliest sessions – regardless of the odour you’re teaching the dog to detect, or what your ideal final indication behaviour looks like, this methodology can easily be adapted to help you level up.

Hans has refined and simplified his system to contain all the necessary components to help you recognise, diagnose and problem solve all of the common detection training concerns well before they become major issues.

As with anything simple though, the devil is in the detail… so for those that choose to lean into the nuance of what Hans has to share there is so much more to learn than what sits on the surface.

There will be a number of working spots available for this seminar, which will give all learners the advantage of seeing the concepts and principles taught in action.

Those that do have working dog spots also benefit directly from being coached hands-on by a legitimately world class trainer.

Once ticket sales go live on our website we’ll share details of how ticket purchasers can also apply to attend with their dogs.

Who is Hans Ebbers?

Hans has long been considered a ‘dog trainers dog trainer’, though you’ll find almost nothing about him on social media…he’s been more of a quiet achiever.

Already member of Germany’s elite Spezialeinsatzkommando (SEK, “Special Task Force”) Hans transitioned to serve in their K9 unit in 1992, and has been educating dog handlers and trainers since 1997.

Recently retired from his career in the SEK, Hans has been deeply involved in all aspects of detection work at the highest levels internationally. He is also an international IGP (Schutzhund) judge, and a very experienced dogsport competitor.

Hans has gone on to educate and influence thousands of dog trainers throughout his long career across multiple countries and continents, and is broadly considered one of the premiere detection guys in Europe amongst folks that know.

You can read more about Hans’ CV here – it’s truly wild to consider just how deeply skilled and experienced he is.

Hans has developed some of the most cutting edge detection training technology available in the world today, which is in use in many government agencies/organisations including specialised elements of our own Australian Army.

Along his wife Dr Esther Schalke, Hans also trained a number of COVID detection dogs that were proven time and again to be far more accurate and cost effective than standard PCR testing. A peer reviewed paper about this can be found here.

Why learn from Hans?

As you may have seen on our social media late last year, I had the honour and pleasure of hosting Hans (and his brilliant wife Dr Esther Schalke) for a private industry seminar at CSI HQ.

That event was attended by some of Australia’s most active, experienced, educated and respected dog trainers working with very high end detection dogs in real world roles.

We also had a number of trainers there with much less dog training experience – and no experience in the detection space – who universally reported that they took away massive learning from Hans.

So you – the dog training enthusiast – can be certain that working with/learning from Hans is absolutely certain to provide you with tremendous value.
